US Income Tax Calculator 2024
Estimate your federal income tax using 2024 brackets. Supports Single, Married Filing Jointly and Head of Household, with standard or itemized deductions.
What this tax estimate covers
This calculator estimates US federal income tax for the 2024 tax year, using the 2024 ordinary income brackets and standard deduction amounts for Single, Married Filing Jointly and Head of Household. It is an estimate, not tax advice. It does not include state income tax, Social Security or Medicare (FICA) tax, tax credits, long-term capital gains rates, or the Married Filing Separately status.
How to use it, step by step
- Enter your gross annual income in dollars.
- Choose Single, Married Filing Jointly or Head of Household.
- Keep Use Standard Deduction ticked to use the amount shown, or untick it and type your total itemized deductions.
- Click Calculate Tax. Read the breakdown and the tax by bracket list.
How the figure is worked out
The deduction is subtracted from gross income, and taxable income cannot fall below zero. Each rate applies only to the slice of taxable income inside its bracket. The brackets are 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. The effective rate is total federal tax divided by gross income. The marginal rate is the rate on the last dollar of taxable income. Income after federal tax is gross income minus federal tax.
Worked example
A single filer earns $75,000. The standard deduction is $14,600, so taxable income is $60,400. Tax is 10% of the first $11,600 ($1,160), plus 12% of the next $35,550 ($4,266), plus 22% of the remaining $13,250 ($2,915). Total federal tax is $8,341. The effective rate is 11.1% of gross income, the marginal rate is 22%, and income after federal tax is $66,659.

US Income Tax Calculator 2024 – Frequently Asked Questions
What tax year does this calculator use?
It uses the 2024 US federal income tax brackets and 2024 standard deduction amounts. It does not calculate state income tax, and the figures are not updated automatically.
What is the standard deduction?
For 2024 the standard deduction is $14,600 for Single filers, $29,200 for Married Filing Jointly and $21,900 for Head of Household.
Does this include FICA taxes?
No. Social Security tax (6.2% up to the annual wage base) and Medicare tax (1.45%) are separate from federal income tax and are not included in the result.
Should I use the standard or itemized deduction?
Use whichever is larger. If your itemized deductions, such as mortgage interest and charitable gifts, exceed the standard deduction for your status, itemizing may reduce your tax.
Is this tax advice?
No. The result is an estimate. It leaves out state tax, credits, dependents and other items. Check current IRS guidance at irs.gov, and speak to a qualified tax professional before you file.
