YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
Paste a YouTube link or video ID to preview the thumbnail and download it in sizes from Full HD to small. The thumbnail belongs to the video owner, so use it with permission.
What this YouTube thumbnail downloader does
Every YouTube video has a thumbnail, the still image that appears in search results and on the video page. This tool finds the video ID in a YouTube link, shows you a preview of the thumbnail, and lets you download it in several sizes, from Full HD down to a small 120 × 90 image.
The tool only handles the thumbnail image. It does not download the video, audio or captions, and it does not need you to sign in to YouTube.
How to download a thumbnail step by step
- Open the YouTube video in your browser and copy its address from the address bar or the Share menu.
- Paste the link into the YouTube link or video ID box. You can also paste only the 11-character ID.
- Press Get thumbnail. The tool reads the ID and shows the preview.
- Check that the preview matches the video you meant.
- Choose a size from the download list and select Download.
- If a size fails, choose the next smaller option and try again.
A concrete example
Suppose you have the short link https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ. The part after the slash, dQw4w9WgXcQ, is the video ID. Pasting the full link or just the ID gives the same preview. If you choose the Full HD option and the download fails, the video has no 1280 × 720 image. Choosing HQ (480 × 360) saves a JPEG that works for most purposes, such as a blog post or a presentation slide with the owner's permission.
Accepted link formats
- youtube.com/watch?v=ID for standard videos
- youtu.be/ID for short share links
- youtube.com/shorts/ID for Shorts
- youtube.com/embed/ID for embedded players
- A bare 11-character ID, with letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores
Honest limits
- Not every video has every size. The Full HD image is the most likely to be missing.
- The preview uses the HQ image, so a video with no HQ image will show a message instead.
- Private, deleted or mistyped videos have no thumbnail to download.
- The thumbnail belongs to the video owner. Download and reuse it only with permission or where the copyright holder allows.
YouTube Thumbnail Downloader – Frequently Asked Questions
Which YouTube link formats can I paste?
You can paste a youtube.com/watch?v= link, a youtu.be short link, a youtube.com/shorts/ link, a youtube.com/embed/ link, or the bare 11-character video ID. The tool reads the ID from any of these and ignores extra parameters such as timestamps.
Why does one download work and another size fail?
YouTube does not create every thumbnail size for every video. The Full HD (1280 × 720) image is missing for many videos, especially older ones. When a size fails, choose a smaller one such as HQ (480 × 360), which is available for most videos.
Can this tool download the video itself?
No. It only retrieves the thumbnail image that YouTube shows for a video. It does not download audio, video files or subtitles.
Do I need permission to use a downloaded thumbnail?
Usually yes. A thumbnail belongs to the person or organisation that published the video. Use it with their permission, or in a way the copyright holder allows, such as for commentary on the video itself.
Why is there no preview for my video ID?
The preview uses the standard HQ image. If the video is private, deleted or the ID is wrong, YouTube returns no image and the tool shows a message instead of a preview.
